Bumper-to-bumper traffic has become a daily hurdle. While a single company can do little to put a stopper on the rising number of vehicles on city roads, part of the solution lies in ironing out parking problems.
"Most Indian cities — and Bengaluru among those with the highest traffic density — have many more vehicles than their roads can take," observes Chetan Chauhan, co-founder of Constapark.
The startup, through its Android app, helps motorists — individuals as well as other businesses — locate parking slots around them and pay for them online.
"We also have valet parking for four-wheelers in localities with the highest traffic density — MG and Brigade Roads, Indiranagar, Koramangala, Jayanagar..." he says.
"The rates vary in different parts of the city, depending on the vendor and how commercial the area is."
Over the past year, however, parking prices are on the rise across the city, he notes. "In fact, all over South India, with Hyderabad coming up on the top. Chennai and Kochi, not so much," he adds.
The startup merely provides technology to aggregate parking services.
It also provides parking subscription for those with multiple vehicles. This has many takers, individuals as well as the likes of 'Ola Cabs' and 'Wicked Ride'.
Founders Chetan and Mehul Pangtey prefer to take parking off the roads to dedicated spaces. But the startup has tied up with the municipal corporation for parking on the wider streets in Electronics City and Bidadi.
"We provide tech on a revenue-sharing-basis. They need not make any investment, and the money reaches them at the end of every month," says the entrepreneur.
Now, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has got in touch with the startup to help them with a similar setup in that city, he adds.
Constapark was registered as a company in 2013, but its first product, the app, came out last year after much research.
"Inspired by our own parking woes, we started out with the idea of providing a platform for booking slots. But soon we realised that in India we lack the infrastructure for it. Moreover, parking is more an on-demand service, like cab aggregation, than an advance-booking one. Why would a mall want to book parking slots rather than let people occupy the vacant ones as and when they drive in?," asks Chetan.
So he and his team of 10 tweaked the central idea around to arrive at their present model. Currently, they are preparing to gradually expand to other cities — Hyderabad, Delhi and Ahmedabad, for now.
"In addition, though we are mostly a tech startup, we are working on some hardware for the vendors' convenience, and also on bettering the camera feed so that we can use it for security, to monitor traffic and keep track of the slots available," he says.
