The look is classic old school, but the coverage is ahead of its time' is what most vintage car owners would say. Thanks to their love for Fiat cars, four friends got together to form a club called 'Fiat 1100 Club Bangalore (FCB)' in 2009. Arun Srinivasan, Karthik Makam, Karthik B Mallur and Sujith Thomas met first on Orkut, then in person and eventually decided to form the club.
Says Arun, a software engineer, "Two of us grew up with Fiat cars in our homes, so it holds a sentimental value for us. I've been using my father's car which is a 1991 model Fiat — it recently turned 25."
Creating a platform for like-minded drivers to share their love for the car, the club meets once in four months. Meanwhile, they are constantly in touch with each other and share information about where they can buy spare parts, find a good mechanic and so on. Currently, they have over 200 members.
"Taking care of the car and talking about it is just our hobby. We had no expectations when we started it. All we wanted to do was help each other out and when others heard about us, they decided to join in as well,"explains Arun. For Karthik B Mallur, a cinematographer, this car holds a special value to him.
He shares, "My dad's Fiat was the first car that I ever drove. It's the one that I learnt how to drive in. Being part of this club has taught me so much. Ilove being part of the club as the members also treat you as special as they treat their cars."
Apart from meeting and discussing their cars, the club also enjoys going on long rides around the city and to breakfast joints. Vijayanda Prabhu, a member, says, "This club is for a bunch of Fiat nuts to express their love for the car. My love for Fiat started with my dad's 1989 model and I've owned a few of them since then. I've been part of this group for the last three year and it's been a great journey so far."
Being a seven-year-old club, they celebrate their anniversary and meet every quarter. The club has also done a few charity drives to raise donations and create awareness of social issues. They also took part in an awareness programme on traffic rules along with the Bangalore Traffic Police.
TC Shakeer, a finance professional, says, "The team club is a great venue to build a foundation for like-minded car enthusiasts. Fiat has been part of the country's automobile world for years and it still holds special sentiments to many. Having been part of the club for two years, I've learnt a lot and made a lot of new friends."
Karthik, another founding member, agrees to this and explains,"Fiat has been my favourite car since childhood. When I could afford one, I decided to buy one for myself. It required some knowledge on the maintenance and that's where the club helped me. Someone is always available when you ask for help."
Creating a family of car lovers, FCB is growing in passion and in number. After all, a body this remarkable needs to be kept in top shape.
