Fairytale on the runway

It has been two years since Smarani Vupalla and her sister Sravani launched their label 'Pushpak Vimaan', which caters to garments that tell a story. Sharing a passion for fairytales, the sibling duo design clothes that are comfortable and is inspired by both traditional and contemporary features, in every detail, fabric, colour and silhouette. While Smarani takes care of the creative (design) aspect, Sravani helps to bring all the ends of the label together. And they have been successful in creating magic for the years.

In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, Smarani talks about the sisters' passion for creating impeccable clothes, their latest collection and things that can make up a comfortable wardrobe this season.

You are a trained architect... how did fashion designing happen?
As someone from a creative field, nothing gives me more joy than to see my designs come to life. After a brief stint in the field of architecture, my awe for the fashion world brought out another side of me. I decided to follow my heart and discover this passion for telling stories through cut, colour and fall.

If not a designer...
I would love to be a graphic artist.

The best part of being a fashion designer...

You get to set your own rules.The first design you remember...
My dad would always have these unstitched shirt-pant fabrics neatly tucked in a shelf of his wardrobe. I borrowed a pair of those and asked a men's tailor to stitch me a pair of high-waisted boot-cut pants and a snugly fitted formal shirt. The challenge was to convince him

Someone you always wanted to work with?
It has to be Sabyasachi Mukherjee.

Your latest collection looks comfortable and very apt for the colder months...
Our latest collection 'Manchala' is about those who wants it all — peace, love, freedom — and is not hesitant to admit the dubious nature of their desires. She has the mind of a hermit and the heart of a hipster. The colours we have highlighted are black, grey and denim blue and we have also used organza and silk tussar.

Something about you that the world doesnt know?
I am a control freak while my sister is the passive aggressive one.

Five essentials for this season?
Pleats, frills, sheer overlays, oversized sleeves and structured silhouettes.
