Run for your life' usually has a negative connotation but for 'Teevra', it's what makes them unique. Advocating the mantra of 'happiness through fitness', the running club includes around 10 to 12 members who come together on a weekly basis to train for various runs in and around the city.
Founder of the club, Arupendu Gupta, a central government employee and the coach at 'Teevra', says, "We formed this club as the members were interested in running. All of us met through various runs that we've participated in, and with several chats exchanged, we realised that it made sense for us to meet regularly and train for the runs across the city."The group usually meets at Cubbon Park or Kanteerava Indoor Stadium for their training. 'Teevra' stands for 'fast' in Sanskrit. The club includes runners of all ages, the youngest being 12 years old. "We don't want to think about and focus on the number of people who want to join us. We simply want people to enjoy running and have designed different training programmes to suit various age groups. The youngsters have a lot more sprinting and similar exercises, whereas the adults have a slightly more rigorous training process. The kids don't run more than 10 km at any point," he adds.
Arupendu gets his training from Surinder Singh who sends him instructions and guidance for his group. He has the programmes stored on his phone, that he uses for the comprehensive training programme.
Niharika Gupta, a class 10 student, says, "We are an enthusiastic and motivated group of runners. The elders have shown me the advantages of a healthy lifestyle and what team spirit is all about. My most wonderful memory is of the time when the team was awarded 'The Best Dressed Group' at the Bangalore 10K Challenge this year."
Sharing her experience is also Rashmi Chetry, an employee at CGI. She says, "Being a part of this club is different because of its inclusive nature. All of us chat and laugh during our long runs. Even after a hectic workout, I feel relaxed and happy. The focussed stadium drills have helped improve my core strength a lot."
But the club is not just about running and keeping fit. As Arupendu says, "We want people to know that there's a life beyond that as well." They meet regularly to party, hang out together and indulge in other fun activities. Ronita Khanikar, a class nine student, says, "This club has become a place to accompany my mother to during her workouts and also spend time with my friends who enjoy running. I love that we always go out for breakfast after the workout; this allows us to discover new restaurants and interesting food options as well."
Neeraj Maurya, the proprietor of 'Maurya Infra', shares,"I love how I get to learn something new every time, especially given that everyone is good at something. The Plank Fitness Challenge was an interesting one as all of us broke our own personal records. The delicious breakfast that followed was well-deserved indeed."
With over a year of sharing their love for fitness, the club members have become like a family. Sowmya Gupta, another member of 'Teevra', proudly says,"As I am a housewife, this club gives me an opportunity to be a part of something more than running. From running to going on picnics, pub-hopping, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, we do it all with zeal! We are all part of a big extended family now."
