Vaishali Shah never really thought of getting into baking, however, it was the break during her pregnancy that got her interested in whisks and ovens. And once her daughter turned one, she took up baking as a profession, after doing a certification course on fondant cakes. It has been five years since Vaishali entered this field and her primary interest is into eggless baking.
"After one learns the basics of cake baking and decoration, I believe that thereafter, it is about ones own innovation, that leads to some of the amazing creations. Experimenting with ingredients and raw materials has always been my passion and this motivates me to create something new and unique each time," says Vaishali.
After mastering the art herself and along with orders, she takes cake baking classes as well. And anyone who is a baking enthusiast is welcome to join her classes. She says her family's support has encouraged her a lot and motivated her in every step she takes now.
"I sometimes bake at night as I want to spend as much time as I can with my family and children. It is my in-laws support that keeps me going," adds Vaishali. She caters to mainly customised fondant cakes for occasions like birthdays (both kids and adults) and anniversaries and dessert tables that include cake pops, mousse, dessert shots and truffle cakes. It is mostly through word-of-mouth and her Facebook page — 'Yummy Whips by Vaishali'— that people get to know about her. "I provide delivery services across the city and it is encouraging to see people appreciating my hard work,"says Vaishali.
Baking for her is an art where creativity plays a huge role. It needs patience and determination and can be a good stress buster. Her theme based birthday cakes are extremely popular. And some of the most in-demand themes are the princess and Disney characters. She says her recent creation of the Disney cartoon 'little mermaid' received a lot of appreciation from many quarters. The figures were supposed to be very realistic and working on it was a huge challenge for her. "I have received favourable responses from my customers and in fact, the demand for birthday cakes for adults is more than those for kids since they enjoy the taste and flavours I use. It is encouraging to see my family eagerly waiting to see what comes out from the oven next. Whenever I make a figure, I show it to my daughter and ask her to recognise it. If she guesses it right, I understand that it will be relatable to anyone," she says.
Ask her what her plans are and she says "Things are going on a positive note as of now. And I don't plan to add anything new. However, as my kids grow up, I plan to open a store for convenience."
