A walk to remember

There are many photographers in the city who have clicked brilliant pictures in their particular genres. While each of them has their own agenda, nature and landscape photographers have different goals.

Their aim is to show people what they can already see, give the experience they would otherwise have never experienced. They want to preserve moments that might just be forgotten and capture things which have no words to describe.

Pratap J, a software engineer and part-time photographer, has been capturing amazing landscape pictures across the country since 2007. Ask him his inspiration and he says, "Ilove shooting anything that is outdoors. While nature and landscape photography is my genre, I also do a bit of architecture and street photography." He also conducts workshops on digital post-production during his free time.

Going around the country with his Canon 5D Mark III, Pratap plans a trip to the North once a year and travels in Karnataka during his weekends. He says, "During my travels, I have observed that India has a lot to offer. If you just cross from one border to another, you'll find deserts, mountains, rain forest and beach. I want to explore as much as I can within the country before I travel abroad."

However, he says travelling to find a place that he wants to shoot is not always easy. He explains, "It's quite challenging to travel within the country because most of the places are not marketed properly. If it is a mountain area, one has to trek a lot. In the case of a forest, you have to study the weather and take a guide along with you."

Pratap is happy that he hasn't faced any issues during his travels, though. He laughs and says, "One must need some patience and humility to travel in the country. Once you figure out a way around it, you'll be just fine."

One of his favourite places to travel within Karnataka is Hampi as he thinks it's great that apart from the architectural designs, there's a beautiful landscape that makes his picture better.

Though many think that landscape and nature photography isn't hard to shoot, Pratap says that it is as challenging as any other genre of photography. "Firstly, the lenses we use are different. As the camera doesn't capture what we actually see with our eyes, I have to use the kind of lens that will capture what I want to portray. Secondly, because we live in such a populated country, it's not always easy to find a location that is not spoiled by us."

However, he wishes that we all make an attempt to preserve this world. He says, "I think we all take it for granted that someone else will clean our mess. There's no one to fix what we are doing other than us. If we want out future generation to survive, we all have to make an effort now itself. That's what I'm hoping to do with my pictures as well."
