Riding bikes is not a boy's forte anymore. These women riders are changing the age-old belief that diamonds are their best friend. And it's not just any bike that they are picking up, but the strong, sturdy ones like a Harley Davidson (HD) to make a statement.

Praveshika Katiyar, a tech lead at HCL, was excited to break her fixed deposit last year to buy herself a 'Harley Street 750'. She proudly says, "I have always been a bike enthusiast but it was last year that I decided to buy myself a bike. Though I did try my hand at other heavy bikes, HD was the only one that I was comfortable on. The ergonomics of the motorbike suits me." She has also been part of many fun rides that happen on a weekly and monthly basis.

She says, "I love the compliments and admiration that Iget when I'm riding. I have the freedom to ride wherever I want. I like the fact that one would judge me for the rider that I am and not because of my gender. In the last year, I have gained so much confidence personally and on the road." Making a statement with her HD bike is Shirley George, an architect. She says, "Ever since I can remember, I would want to get myself involved with a bike — even if it is to sit in the front. I soon started to learn riding on my father's Hero Honda and my brother's RoyalEnfield. When HD came to the city, I wanted my hands on it badly." She is the proud owner of 'Harley Davidson Fatboy' and loves going on rides whenever she gets a chance.

Shirley recalls an incident during one of her trips when she lost the way. She says, "This was during one of the North India trips that I had done with other women bikers in the city. I lost my way and ended up riding towards Jaipur. I encountered a few truck drivers who asked where I was going.I told them that I am part of a racing competition and that I am running first in the race (laughs). I eventually found my way back to the group and we continued with the ride."She usually plans at least one long trip a month which ultimately becomes a family vacation. She hopes to go on a bike ride to New Zealand soon.

Adding to the cool quotient of women riders is Krupa Reddy, an assistant manager. Sharing her story of finding the right bike, she says with a smile, "I own a 'Harley Street 750' and it was 'love at first test ride for me'. It's been a smooth ride since. I ride from Kalyan Nagar to Whitefield everyday and it's such a thrilling experience. I feel like a celebrity when people make way for me on busy roads!" She has often encountered people following her just to confirm if it was a woman riding.

"I have no trouble kicking start a conversation with people around me. The one thing I am not comfortable sharing is my bike. My husband is the only lucky one to get a chance on it, but I'm always squabbling with him for not riding the way I would,"she laughs.
